June 06, 2006
It was a day of conflicting fortunes for India at the French Open. Sania Mirza prolonged her stay in Paris with a victory in the women's doubles second round while Mahesh Bhupathi's campaign at the French Open came to an end.
Sania and her partner Janette Husarova stunned third seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3, 6-4 to set up a meeting 15th seeds Eleni Daniilidou and A Medina Garrigues in the third round.
Bhupathi, a two-time champion here, and Xavier Malisse went down to Andrei Pavel and Alexander Waske 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the doubles quarterfinal. Later on Monday, Bhupathi and Martina Hingis decided to give a walkover to their second round opponents, Martina Navratilova and Bob Bryan.
In the junior's section, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan bowed out in the second round with a 2-6, 2-6 loss to top seed Thierno de Bakker of the Netherlands while seventh seed Sanam Singh was shocked by Martin Klizan 2-6, 5-7.
