Sania bows out of French Open Tennis
May 31, 2006
Sania Mirza has lost her first round tie to Russian Anastasia Myskina in the French Open on Tuesday.
The loss is another one in a long list of disappointing performances for the Hyderabad girl in 2006.
In her second singles grand slam outing of the year, the world number 40 succumbed in just over an hour to the 2004 French Open champion.
Although Sania played a tight first set, she could not put up a strong resistance against the world number 12, who hardly broke a sweat as she completed a straight forward 6-4, 6-1 win.
After a promising start to her career, the 2005 Hyderabad Open winner has continued to perform well below her potential.
Although she has occasionally stretched some top players like Martina Hingis, she has also faced defeat against players ranked as low as 144.
Sania, who had also failed to go past the first round of the French Open last year, will now be hoping for a better showing in the women's doubles.
